Last month, Senate Republicans managed to block legislation that would have established a 9/11-style, independent commission to investigate the events that led up to and took place during Jan. 6 Capitol riot.
However, the Washington Examiner reported this week that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) will soon announce whether or not she plans to form a House select committee to investigate what the media calls a day of “insurrection” in the nation’s capital.
Pelosi reportedly announced her intention to make the decision on the possibility of forming the special committee during a meeting earlier in the week, though there was some initial confusion in the media after a source mistakenly suggested that she had already made the decision.
Clearing up confusion
Drew Hammill, Pelosi’s deputy chief of staff, corrected the record shortly after the confusion that generated a number of misleading media reports, revealing in a tweet the current status of the Speaker’s plans.
“Speaker Pelosi told Members she plans to announce WHETHER she will create a select committee THIS WEEK,” Hammill wrote in a Tuesday night tweet. “Her preference continues to be a bipartisan commission which Senate Republicans are blocking,” he added.
However, CNN chief congressional correspondent Manu Raju reacted to Hammill’s clarification with skepticism, reporting that a Democratic “source” allegedly said that Pelosi had already decided to form the investigative select committee, according to a tweet.
He acknowledged that Pelosi had earlier denied to reporters that she had yet to reach any final decision regarding whether the new commission would be created.
“But even after her denial, a source who heard the speaker said she had indicated she had given the Senate a few weeks to act and that the existing House committees are too big and unwieldy,” Raju tweeted. “Select committee will be named, the source said.”
Eleven senators absent from the vote
Last month’s push for a 9/11-style independent commission was largely opposed by Senate Republicans, with only six members voting in favor of the Democrat-led effort.
Fox News reported that Democrats faced an additional obstacle after nine Republicans and two Democrats failed to appear for the vote, citing a rescheduling conflict as a result of the Memorial Day holiday weekend.
Among the Democrats absent from the voting procedure was moderate Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ). Sinema has become a target for many within the ranks of her own party, especially as President Joe Biden recently suggested that she and fellow moderate Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) have become an obstacle to his advancing his agenda.
Many believe that the Democrats, including Pelosi, are only interested in forming a new investigative committee in an effort to politically weaponize the tragic events that took place on Jan. 6 against Republicans as the 2022 midterms approach next year.
