Pelosi dodges reporter’s question about when human life begins in womb

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) was recently pressed by one reporter on her opinion about when human life begins.

Asked whether she believes an unborn baby at 15 weeks of development is a human being, the pro-choice Catholic lawmaker gave a typically evasive non-answer.

“I am a mother of five children”

The exchange came as the Catholic Church considers new policies that could preclude pro-choice public figures from receiving communion.

CNS News reporter Julia Johnson posed the question, prompting the House speaker to dodge as artfully as possible while declaring her continued support for the Supreme Court ruling that made abortion legal nationwide.

“Is an unborn baby at 15 weeks a human being?” Johnson asked.

After taking a moment to consider the question, Pelosi replied: “Let me just say that I am a big supporter of Roe v. Wade. I am a mother of five children in six years. I think I have some standing on this issue as to respecting a woman’s right to choose.”

New scientific data

Of course, millions of pro-life Americans do not believe Pelosi’s status as a mother of five has anything to do with her “standing” on the issue of allowing other women to end the developing life of their own unborn children.

Despite advancements in the science of fetal development that would indicate a fetus is very much a human being after 15 weeks of gestation, Pelosi cannot admit such inconvenient facts. Doing so would force her to either abandon her support of abortion rights or acknowledge that she finds it acceptable to essentially murder unborn humans in the pursuit of a woman’s right to choose.

While she repeatedly urged the nation’s leaders to “follow the science” pertaining to the COVID-19 pandemic, Pelosi appears unwilling to do the same on the issue of abortion.

Science has advanced dramatically since the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision. While justices at that time did not have access to current data, today’s Supreme Court does — and it remains to be seen whether the conservative majority will use that knowledge to reverse that landmark precedent.

Justices will have an opportunity to address the issue in an upcoming case involving Mississippi’s ban on abortions after 15 weeks, which could usher in a new era allowing additional restrictions on the practice that so many Americans believe is tantamount to murder.
