Pelosi demands bipartisan probe to ‘root out the causes’ of Capitol riot

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) announced this week that she would be setting up a committee to study the riot that occurred on Capitol Hill on Jan. 6.

But at a press conference Thursday, the speaker made comments that some said suggested she’s more interested in backing up her own narrative than getting to the facts.

“Seek the truth”

“January 6th was a day of darkness for our country,” Pelosi began in her weekly talk with reporters, according to a transcript from the speaker’s office.

“That day, one of the darkest — I say again, I will keep saying — days in our history, our temple of democracy was attacked by insurrectionists. You know all of this,” she added. “The gleeful desecration of the Capitol resulted in multiple deaths, physical harm to over 140 members of law enforcement and terror and trauma among staff, workers and members. That trauma is something I can never forget or forgive.”

Pelosi went on to say that now, six months later, “many questions regarding the circumstances of this assault on our democracy and the response to it remain.” As such, she says it’s “imperative” to “seek the truth.”

“To do that, we believe that a bipartisan commission would be the best way to proceed in the spirit of patriotism and bipartisanship,” the California Democrat declared, according to the transcript. “It is imperative that we establish the truth of that day, and ensure that an attack of that kind cannot happen and that we root out the causes of it all,” she emphasized.

The “root causes”

Writing later for BizPacReview, Vivek Saxena noted that although Pelosi claimed the investigation is necessary to uncover what brought about the riots, she intimated in the same remarks that she already knows the answer.

Among the “root causes” named by Pelosi for the January breach of the Capitol were “the white supremacy, the anti-Semitism, the Islamophobia — the rest of it that was so evident when you see a sweatshirt on one of the people saying ‘Camp Auschwitz.'”

Saxena, of course, was not alone in pointing out the apparent contradiction in Pelosi’s words. One Twitter user wrote inquisitively: “Conclusion before an investigation. Hmmm…”

Another cited by Saxena found it “hilarious” that Pelosi was “stating the root causes before the committee that would supposedly determine the root causes has been formed.” Only time will tell if the GOP lets her get away with this one.
