House Republicans move to censure Biden over failure to act on border

Since taking office in January, President Joe Biden has wasted no time in his efforts to reverse nearly every border security policy put in place by his predecessor. But with migration surging at the U.S.–Mexico line, many have said it’s the current commander in chief who’s to blame for the mounting — and reportedly ongoing — crisis.

Now, in response to Biden’s “dereliction of duty” with regard to immigration enforcement, a group of House Republicans has filed a resolution to formally censure the president for his alleged “failure to execute the duties of his office,” the Daily Caller reports.

Holding Biden accountable

The call for President Biden to be censured came from 23 House Republicans and was led by Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO), according to the Daily Caller.

The Republicans were reportedly backed by a number of immigration and border enforcement-focused organizations.

“My censure bill holds President Biden accountable for his actions — or lack thereof — at the border,” Boebert said in a statement.

“Biden has refused to enforce the laws securing our border, he has refused to visit our border, his border czar Kamala [Harris] has refused to visit the border, and his Secretary of Homeland Security [Alejando Mayorkas] is lying to the American people by saying that our border is closed,” she added.

“Not only has Biden done nothing to secure the border, he has actively made it worse by implementing policies that incentivize illegal immigration like amnesty, catch and release, and abolishing the remain in Mexico policy,” the congresswoman declared. “The result of Biden’s mismanagement is staggering, and the numbers speak for themselves.”

“Usurpation of the legislative power”

The censure resolution itself plainly expresses “disapproval of the failure” by the White House “to uphold the constitutional duty to ‘take Care that the Laws be faithfully executed.'”

It goes on to point to several federal statutes within the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA) that require undocumented aliens to be detained and removed before arguing that, as head of the executive branch, the president has the duty to “ensure the faithful execution” of those laws passed by Congress.

The Republicans also called for Biden to remove Mayorkas from his role as Homeland Security secretary and excoriated Biden for his alleged “usurpation of the legislative power of Congress in his withholding of duly appropriated funding for the southern border wall.”

Unfortunately, given the fact that the House of Representatives is under the control of Democrat Speaker Nancy Pelosi (CA), it is highly unlikely that this censure resolution will ever reach the floor for a vote, as reports note.

Still, the the message it sends is unmistakable — and Biden would be wise to heed it, lest the GOP bring it back to life next time they control the lower chamber of Congress.
