Despite being tapped by President Joe Biden more than three months ago to head up his administration’s efforts to mitigate the crisis at the U.S.–Mexico border — at least on the diplomatic front — Vice President Kamala Harris still hasn’t made a trip to the border to see the situation for herself. But that’s apparently about to change.
Harris finally admitted defeat this week, with the White House announcing that she would be joining Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas on a trip to El Paso, Texas, on Friday, according to Fox News.
“Earlier this year, the President asked the Vice President to oversee our diplomatic efforts to address the root causes of migration from El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras,” the vice president’s spokesperson told Politico on Wednesday. “As a part of this ongoing work, the Vice President traveled to Guatemala and Mexico earlier this month and will travel to El Paso on Friday.”
“The worst in American history”
Former President Donald Trump was quick to seize on the news, taking a victory lap soon after in a statement shared by The Daily Wire.
“After months of ignoring the crisis at the Southern Border, it is great that we got Kamala Harris to finally go and see the tremendous destruction and death they’ve created — a direct result of Biden ending my very tough but fair Border policies,” the former president said.
“Harris and Biden were given the strongest Border in American history,” Trump continued, according to The Daily Wire. “And now, it is by far the worst in American history.”
The former president went on to declare that Harris “would have never gone” had it not been for his own plans to visit the border alongside Republican Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, CNBC reported.
“Even you must be discouraged”
However, Trump was far from alone in calling out the vice president’s absence. According to The Daily Wire, 56 House Republicans signed onto a letter last week expressing a similar sentiment.
“Despite being in the midst of a border crisis this country has not seen in two decades, Vice President Harris has not yet shown adequate interest in observing this crisis first-hand,” the letter read.
“In the 85 days since the Vice President has been tasked with solving this crisis, she has yet to visit the border and meet with Border Patrol agents, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials and local law enforcement officials,” the Republicans added, as The Daily Wire reported.
“This country cannot afford another minute of inaction from Vice President Harris,” they said, asking Biden to find someone else to lead his administration’s efforts.
“While you have publicly defended the Vice President, even you must be discouraged with her inaction,” they surmised. And it’s hard not to agree.
