Breitbart reports that President Joe Biden’s most recent budget proposal could end up, in effect, forcing Americans to fund abortions.
What Biden’s budget for the 2022 fiscal year actually does is eliminate the longstanding Hyde Amendment. The Hyde Amendment, with a few exceptions, stops taxpayer money from being used to fund abortions.
The Hyde Amendment has been included in legislation annually since 1976, receiving bipartisan support. But, it is not in Biden’s budget, despite the fact that Biden has supported it in the past.
Neither Biden nor the White House has explained this sudden change. But, we can guess at some of what has been going on behind the scenes.
An “exciting” “historic step”
Planned Parenthood was among those pro-abortion groups who celebrated the Biden administration’s decision to drop the Hyde Amendment.
“Exciting to see the admin’s historic step!” Planned Parenthood wrote. “For too long, the Hyde amendment has put the gov’t in control of personal health care decisions for people with low incomes. Your ZIP code, income, or health insurance should never determine the care you can access, incl. abortion.”
It is likely the case that groups like Planned Parenthood had a role in the change.
As the pro-life Susan B. Anthony List group put it, the Biden administration, by not including the Hyde Amendment in the budget, threw “bipartisan consensus out the window to fulfill a campaign promise to the radical abortion lobby.”
Previous reports have exposed the close relationship that several members of the Biden administration, including Vice President Kamala Harris and Health and Human Services Secretary (HSS) Xavier Becerra, have with the abortion industry.
It’s not a popular decision
Polls have indicated that the Hyde Amendment, or at least what the amendment does, is generally supported.
A Knights of Columbus/Marist Poll, for example, recently found that 58 percent of participants – including 31 percent of Democrats, 83 percent of Republicans, and 65 percent of Independents – indicated that they are against taxpayer money being used to fund abortions.
As is the case with many policy decisions made by the Biden administration, however, here Biden is choosing the wishes of far-left lobbyists over the opinion of Americans, and, in this case, even over the teachings of his religion. It appears that money and votes really do talk, at least to Biden.
