According to Breitbart, the Biden administration has revealed that it is taking a “very close look” at vaccine passports.
A vaccine passport would be documentation proving that an individual has been vaccinated against the coronavirus. The idea would be that the individual would have to have this passport to participate in various aspects of life, such as traveling.
The latest
It was Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas who recently revealed that the Biden administration is looking at vaccine passports. He made the admission during an interview Friday on ABC.
Asked whether “vaccine passports for travel internationally, either into or out of the U.S.” are possible, Mayorkas replied, “we’re taking a very close look at that,” adding that he would make sure “that any passport that we provide for vaccination is accessible to all and that no one is disenfranchised.”
The DHS, subsequently, felt the need to clarify Mayorkas’ statement, saying that he was simply “ensuring that all U.S. travelers will be able to easily meet any anticipated foreign country entry requirements.”
This, of course, sidestepped the question of whether such passports will ever be mandated here in America by the Biden administration.
Mayorkas’s initial response suggested that it is a possibility. But, the DHS’s follow-up left that question open.
Background
After the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) updated its coronavirus guidance, allowing vaccinated people to go maskless and to stop social distancing, the talk has turned to enforcement.
The federal government, under President Joe Biden, has stopped short of saying that it will force unvaccinated people to continue wearing facemasks or socially distance or anything else. But, outside of the federal government, this is not the case.
There are signs that we are heading in direction of certain entities requiring proof of vaccination in order for Americans to participate in their services. Dr. Anthony Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) has suggested that such a requirement is likely in the airline industry, in the cruise ship industry, and even in universities.
Anticipating this, several Republican states have taken steps to prevent such “passports” from becoming part of life in their states. Here, Florida has been among the leaders. But, these Republican states are receiving pushback.
Accordingly, it remains to be seen whether Americans will be able to escape from the coronavirus pandemic with their freedom.
