Newsmax, the conservative alternative streaming news network with a number of anchors who contributed reporting that gave credence to the conspiracy claim that Dominion Voting Systems purposely rigged the 2020 election in then-candidate Joe Biden’s favor, made a stunning announcement in the midst of a multi-billion-dollar defamation lawsuit.
According to the Washington Examiner, Newsmax is apparently no longer on the legal hook after they issued an apology to Dominion Director of Product Strategy and Security Eric Coomer, reporting on Friday that they found not a shred of evidence that Croomer was involved in manipulating the election outcome in any way.
Newsmax backs off election fraud claims
On Friday, Newsmax cleared the air that the network no longer believes Croomer was involved in any wrongdoing or fraudulent activities as far as the 2020 presidential election is concerned.
“Newsmax has found no evidence that Dr. Coomer interfered with Dominion voting machines or voting software in any way, nor that Dr. Coomer ever claimed to have done so,” the bombshell statement read, which was published online and will reportedly be aired on the network.
“Nor has Newsmax found any evidence that Dr. Coomer ever participated in any conversation with members of ‘Antifa,’ nor that he was directly involved with any partisan political organization,” the statement continued. “On behalf of Newsmax, we would like to apologize for any harm that our reporting of the allegations against Dr. Coomer may have caused to Dr. Coomer and his family.”
According to NBC News, shortly before Newsmax published the detailed, apologetic statement online, Croomer dropped the conservative media outlet as a defendant in a defamation lawsuit which still includes prominent figures like Rudy Giuliani, the 2020 Trump campaign, Sidney Powell, and others who pushed similar claims.
Croomer and Newsmax also reportedly reached a monetary settlement, though exact figures were not made available to the public.
The legal battle continues
Croomer’s defamation lawsuit against the aforementioned entities and people, filed in December, is still ongoing. Shortly after the November 2020 election, which was the peak of the election fraud conspiracy rhetoric, Croomer said he was “terrified” after his photos of his home, his address, and other personal details circulated on a number of right-leaning websites at the time.
Dominion Voting Systems filed a similar lawsuit against Fox News, Rudy Giuliani, Sidney Powell and MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell, saying that their claims that Dominion was involved in rigging the 2020 election “caused us severe damage and undermined trust in American democratic institutions.”
Fox News has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing and recently issued a statement to that effect.
“FOX News Media is proud of our 2020 election coverage, which stands in the highest tradition of American journalism, and will vigorously defend against this baseless lawsuit in court,” a recent statement from the cable news giant read.
Only time will tell how others facing lawsuits from Croomer and Dominion — along with competitor Smartmatic — respond to the mounting legal pressure, but with Newsmax clearing its name by issuing an apology and agreeing to a settlement, it’s probably only a matter of time before the rest of the defendants follow suit.
