Biden admin moves to cancel border wall projects funded by money diverted from federal agencies

President Joe Biden had reportedly implemented his latest step to roll back the immigration and border policies of his predecessor.

According to the Washington Examiner, the Pentagon announced this week that the Department of Defense will be canceling all border wall projects that had been funded with money diverted from other federal agencies.

“Supporting our service members and their families”

Pentagon spokesperson Jamal Brown cited Biden’s proclamation on the matter in confirming that “the Department of Defense is proceeding with canceling all border barrier construction projects paid for with funds originally intended for other military missions and functions, such as schools for military children, overseas military construction projects in partner nations, and the National Guard and Reserve equipment account.”

He went on to assert that the “action reflects this administration’s continued commitment to defending our nation and supporting our service members and their families.”

Former President Donald Trump made border wall construction a centerpiece of his campaign and administration but was only able to secure $4 billion in funding for the project through legislative channels.

He was, however, successful in getting an additional $10.5 billion by declaring the southern border situation an emergency, allowing him to divert funds from other departments.

That larger amount appears to be the focus of the Pentagon’s recent announcement. At this point, it is unclear how much of the money remains unspent.

“A plan that identifies additional measures”

During his four years in office, estimates indicate he was able to install about 450 miles of the wall with another 300 miles in the process of being erected when he left office.

One of Biden’s first acts of business upon entering the White House, however, involved suspending further construction on the project. Legal experts recently testified before Congress that the Biden administration violated the Impoundment Control Act by unilaterally withholding funds for the project.

The Department of Homeland Security issued a statement this week vowing to “protect” Americans living along the U.S.-Mexico border from the supposed negative effects of the border wall.

“DHS will soon complete a plan that identifies additional measures to address the damage resulting from the prior Administration’s border wall construction,” the statement reads.

Meanwhile, the migrant crisis on the southern border is getting worse — and many Border Patrol agents do not believe the Biden administration is working to remedy the situation.
