Although high-profile figures within the Biden administration seek to downplay the impact of the current immigration policies on the ongoing border crisis, at least a few prominent Democrats are holding President Joe Biden accountable.
Fox News recently reported that Arizona’s two Democratic U.S. senators publicly stated their dissatisfaction with the manner in which Biden has handled the migrant surge along the U.S.-Mexico border.
“What I didn’t hear tonight”
Both Sens. Mark Kelly and Kyrsten Sinema put out statements this week calling attention to the negative effects of the Biden administration’s policies.
Their respective statements came on the heels of Biden’s first address before a joint session of Congress on Wednesday.
For his part, Kelly noted that he was disappointed that the president did not unveil a robust plan for addressing the southern border problem.
“While I share President Biden’s urgency in fixing our broken immigration system, what I didn’t hear tonight was a plan to address the immediate crisis at the border,” he wrote.
The senator’s statement continued with a vow to “continue holding this administration accountable to deliver the resources and staffing necessary for a humane, orderly process as we work to improve border security, support local economies, and fix our immigration system.”
“Wants to see more action”
Sinema’s office provided a similar statement.
“Sen. Sinema has been clear that she — along with Sen. Kelly — wants to see more action from the administration to address the border crisis and support Arizona border communities. She’s spoken directly with administration officials on this.”
As both senators noted, Biden did not lay out a detailed solution to the southern border crisis. In fact, the closes he came was to suggest that lawmakers should pass a comprehensive immigration bill.
“If you believe we need to secure the border, pass it because it has a lot of money for high-tech border security,” he said.
Of course, plenty of Republicans have also weighed in on the matter following Wednesday’s speech, including former President Donald Trump, who said: “Well, one thing is that he didn’t discuss the border, and the fact that tens of thousands of people are pouring into our country, many of them criminals, many of them people from jails.”
