Some congressional Republicans are raising concerns about the recently released census numbers.
The Daily Caller reports that a group of House Republicans has sent a letter to Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo asking whether the White House interfered in the census numbers.
“We write today with concerns about the apportionment count released by the Census Bureau, and whether the process which derived the count was fair, accurate, and independent from any White House interference,” the letter reads.
It was signed by Rep. James Comer (R-KY), the ranking member of the House Oversight Committee, as well as 16 other Republican members of Congress.
A discrepancy
Republicans are concerned, in part, because the Census Bureau’s numbers “are strikingly different from the population evaluation estimates released just months ago.”
And, they said that the difference definitely benefits the Democrats.
The Republicans state in the letter that, before writing Raimondo, they attempted to have their questions answered by the Census Bureau, but the Census Bureau referred them to the White House.
This, the Republicans called “entirely inappropriate,” and they said that it “raises questions about the level of White House involvement in the process.”
One potential problem
The Census Bureau’s report originally appeared to be good news for Republicans, and in a way it is. Deep blue states like California and New York lost congressional seats while red states like Texas and Florida gained seats.
However, subsequent reports have indicated that California, for example, should have lost at least one more seat than it did. The reason that it didn’t is because of the large number of immigrants that the state has taken on since 2010, a large portion of whom are likely illegal immigrants.
Former President Trump tried to make sure that illegal immigrants were not counted in the most recent census, since it is not fair to give congressional power to non-citizens. President Joe Biden, however, put an end to this effort.
Now, we know that some 331,449,218 people are living in America, but we don’t know how many are doing so legally.
