One Republican believes that Rep. Liz Cheney’s (R-WY) days as a Republican leader are numbered.
In a recent tweet, Rep. Lance Gooden (R-TX) predicted that Cheney could be removed from her leadership position by the end of the month, Breitbart reports.
“Liz Cheney has promised she will campaign on impeaching Trump ‘every day of the week.’ Good luck with that, Liz!” Gooden wrote.
He added: “PREDICTION: she’ll be out of her GOP leadership role by month’s end!”
Background
This whole situation with Cheney started following the January 6th Capitol riot. She was one of the few Republicans in Congress to come out and essentially blame the riot on former President Donald Trump.
Subsequently, she voted in favor of Trump’s impeachment, and, since then, despite much criticism, she has only doubled down on her anti-Trump rhetoric. Cheney has also come out against the new direction of the Republican Party toward middle-class Americans.
In recent interviews, Cheney said that she would not support Trump if he were to run for the presidency in 2024. She, also, suggested that she, herself, might run.
“I’m not ruling anything in or out — ever is a long time,” Cheney said. “I think we have a huge number of interesting candidates, but I think that we’re going to be in a good position to be able to take the White House. I do think that some of our candidates who led the charge, particularly the senators who led the unconstitutional charge, not to certify the election, you know, in my view that’s disqualifying.”
This led to a response from Trump in which he said:
Liz Cheney is polling sooo low in Wyoming, and has sooo little support, even from the Wyoming Republican Party, that she is looking for a way out of her Congressional race. Based on all polling, there is no way she can win. She’ll either be yet another lobbyist or maybe embarrass her family by running for President, in order to save face. This warmongering fool wants to stay in the Middle East and Afghanistan for another 19 years, but doesn’t consider the big picture—Russia and China!
The latest
Just this week, Axios released a report indicating that Republican leadership is considering whether or not to oust Cheney from her Republican leadership position. Besides the House Republican Conference chair, Cheney is also number three in Republican leadership.
She has already survived one such challenge by a vote of 145 to 61.
But, more recently, it appears that some of the same Republican leaders who supported Cheney in that vote, such as House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), are starting to turn on Cheney. Accordingly, it’s very possible that Gooden is right that Cheney’s days are now numbered.
