President Joe Biden’s son, Hunter, has been at the center of multiple controversies, some of which stemmed from his well-documented history of substance abuse.
According to Fox News, some Republicans are now alleging that he violated federal gun laws — and they are calling for an investigation to explore the claims.
“This allegation merits an investigation”
U.S. Rep. Bob Good (R-VA) and 23 other House Republicans signed a letter asking that federal investigators look into a firearm purchase Hunter Biden made in 2018.
Addressing his concerns to David Chipman, the president’s nominee to lead the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, Good wrote to “ask that you publicly commit to investigate allegations that Hunter Biden falsified information during a background check in order to illegally obtain a firearm” if confirmed to the position.
The issue at hand involves a background check form on which Biden reportedly declared that he had not been addicted to drugs.
“Since lying on a background check form is a felony this allegation merits an investigation,” Good’s letter added. “Allegations of this crime are no less serious when leveled at Hunter Biden.”
He went on to assert that Chipman’s “public commitment to hold all Americans to the same standard would demonstrate a good faith effort to maintain the rule of law and keep all Americans safe.”
Serious accusations
Public interest in the gun purchase spiked last month in the wake of a report detailing an incident involving Biden and Hallie Biden, the widow of his late brother, Beau.
Hunter and Hallie Biden were reportedly involved romantically when she threw his recently purchased handgun in a garbage bin outside of a Delaware supermarket out of fear that he would harm himself.
One law enforcement source indicated that police subsequently attempted to retrieve the weapon but could not find it.
According to the report, the case had been referred to the Delaware Department of Justice for review. Before that report was filed, Secret Service and ATF agents allegedly paid a visit to the gun shop where Biden bought the weapon.
The sordid narrative leaves several questions unanswered, but if the GOP lawmakers who signed Good’s letter are successful, a thorough probe could tie up all the loose ends.
