Census gains, redistricting set to favor GOP in midterm congressional races

Voter backlash against Democratic policies combined with the tendency for midterm elections to favor the party out of power is likely to help the GOP in next year’s congressional election.

Recently released census data provided another factor that could result in House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) being replaced by a Republican.

Good news for GOP-led states

According to the Washington Examiner, the U.S. Census Bureau shows that several blue states have lost a significant number of residents while the population of multiple red states has increased.

As a result, Texas is set to increase its congressional delegation from 36 to 38 representatives.

Other Republican-led states, including Florida, Montana, and North Carolina, will pick up one extra seat while West Virginia and Ohio each lost one.

Most of the decreases, however, were seen in reliably Democratic states like California, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Michigan, and New York, each of which will lose one House seat.

The only blue states with notable gains were Oregon and Colorado, both of which picked up one seat. The results represent a net gain of three seats for traditionally Republican states.

“We’re going to win redistricting”

Additionally, states will redraw their district lines this year, which could spell trouble for Democrats seeking to hold onto or expand their political power in places where GOP lawmakers make the decisions.

Although half of the states entrust nonpartisan commissions to tackle redistricting, the rest leave it up to their state legislatures. Of that latter group, 18 are controlled by Republicans and Democrats are in charge of just seven.

In February, National Republican Congressional Committee Chair Tom Emmer declared: “We’re going to win redistricting.”

He went on to explain that the GOP is “going to ensure that the rules and procedures are followed to maximize our opportunities.”

Texas GOP Chair Allen West offered a similar prediction in a statement on Tuesday, writing: “As we redistrict Texas for democratic representation, we must not allow the leftist ideal of representation by population to rule the day. Representation in Texas must be based upon citizenship, and strategically we can ascertain why the left wants to flood Texas with thousands of illegals.”
