Report: Biden administration plans to return to failed two-state solution for Israel and Palestine

Breitbart reports that President Joe Biden and his administration are planning a Palestinian “reset.”

This information comes from a memo titled “The U.S. Palestinian Reset and the Path Forward.” It was written by Deputy Assistant Secretary for Israeli and Palestinian Affairs Hady Amr.

The National was able to obtain this memo, which was recently given to Secretary of State Antony Blinken, and the outlet has now published portions of it.

A return of the two-state solution

Readers will likely not be surprised to learn that the Biden administration in the memo calls for a return to the two-state solution.

The memo states that the United States is looking “to advance freedom, security, and prosperity for both Israelis and Palestinians in the immediate term which is important in its own right, but also as means to advance the prospects of a negotiated two-state solution.”

The idea of the two-state solution is to establish Israel as one state for the Jewish people and to establish Palestine as another state for the Palestinian people. The most important thing to note about the two-state solution is that it has never been successful, which is why the administration of former President Donald Trump ditched it.

The memo, nonetheless, states that the Biden administration will make a return to the two-state solution “based on the 1967 lines with mutually agreed land swaps and agreements on security and refugees.”

The “reset”

This return to the two-state solution, though, is only part of the Biden administration’s plan to “reset” relations with Palestine, relations that had deteriorated under the Trump administration.

“As we reset US relations with the Palestinians, the Palestinian body politic is at an inflection point as it moves towards its first elections in 15 years,” the memo states. “At the same time, we [the US] suffer from a lack of connective tissue following the 2018 closure of the PLO office in Washington and refusal of Palestinian Authority leadership to directly engage with our embassy to Israel.”

According to Breitbart, the Biden administration’s plan would provide $15 million to the Palestinians in coronavirus relief.

And, the plan would also have the United States go back to funding the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA). The Trump administration had stopped sending money to the group after allegations of corruption.

Overall, if the Biden administration follows through on this plan, it will be a return to the failed policies of the pre-Trump administrations. But, that’s Biden’s presidency in a nutshell.
