Supreme Court won’t prevent Manhattan DA from obtaining Trump’s tax returns

The Supreme Court on Monday declined to block Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr. from obtaining former President Donald Trump’s tax returns, The Hill reported.  

Trump released a statement later on Monday condemning the decision. However, if his critics were expecting to hear the former president take a defeated tone, they were surely disappointed. “The Supreme Court never should have let this ‘fishing expedition’ happen, but they did,” Trump said.

He continued, “This is something which has never happened to a President before, it is all Democrat-inspired in a totally Democrat location, New York City and State, completely controlled and dominated by a heavily reported enemy of mine, Governor Andrew Cuomo.”

“I will fight on”

Trump insisted that despite this defeat, “We will win!”

“I will fight on, just as I have, for the last five years (even before I was successfully elected), despite all of the election crimes that were committed against me,” he said.

The former president called Vance’s investigation “fascism, not justice — and that is exactly what they are trying to do with respect to me, except that the people of our Country won’t stand for it.”

Vance’s efforts to obtain the former president’s tax records go back to 2019 when a New York grand jury subpoenaed his accounting firm, Mazars USA, for eight years of Trump’s personal and business tax returns, The Hill reported.

Supreme Court gives no comment

Part of the case revolves around alleged pay-offs to adult film star Stormy Daniels and other women who were said to have been funneled payments through former Trump attorney Michael Cohen.

Cohen, who has since pleaded guilty to a slew of federal crimes, said that the cash was paid to silence the women in order to protect Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign.

Also at issue are allegations by Vance’s office that Trump’s real estate firm, the Trump Organization, may have engaged in financial impropriety.

According to Fox News, parties to the case filed their final written briefs in October, but the Supreme Court opted not to make its decision until after Trump left office.

The Supreme Court offered no comments or noted dissents with the order, Fox reported.
