American foreign policy under the Biden administration appears to be headed in the wrong direction, according to a former member of the Trump administration.
During a recent interview with Newsmax, Former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo expressed his concern that the Biden administration is about to squander some of the foreign policy gains that were made by the Trump administration.
Coddling Iran
Among Pompeo’s biggest concerns is the Middle East, particularly Iran.
“I do worry that the [Biden] administration wants to coddle the regime in Iran, wants to hug them close and appease them, those are the kinds of things that create risk in the Middle East, and when you create risk the Middle East, nations are no longer in place where they can do the right thing every day and always,” Pompeo said.
Pompeo, in part here, was likely referring to the Biden administration’s plan to rejoin the 2015 Iran nuclear deal. This Obama-era policy was scrapped by former President Donald Trump because it was costly and ineffective. Trump replaced it with economic sanctions which have proven more effective.
But, according to Pompeo, in reentering the Iran nuclear deal, the Biden administration will “throw . . . away” the Trump administration’s success.
“It’s why President Trump very quickly convened a strategy, effort, and we put together a plan that put real pressure on the [Iranian] regime,” Pompeo said. “And now they’re about to throw that all away in exchange, for what appears to be, almost nothing.”
Effective foreign policy
In the interview, Pompeo also talked about what effective foreign policy looks like.
“When you’re tough, when you’re strong, where you establish deterrents, then securing American freedom is possible to do,” Pompeo said. He added, “whether it’s China or Iran or threats from malign actors in other parts of the world, terrorist organizations, what they understand is strength. They understand a leader who is prepared to do the right thing to secure American freedom every day.”
Pompeo said that based on what he has seen so far, the Biden administration has “a very muddled understanding” of what led to the Trump administration’s successes.
Pompeo also expressed concern that the Biden administration will throw these successes away simply because they were “from another administration.”
Pompeo, as is usually the case, was right on the money in this interview.
