President Biden’s administration is breaking records, but probably not the kind anybody wants to brag about.
On Tuesday, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki had to defend an administration move to reopen facilities to house migrant children that had been widely criticized by Democrats and the media, and had been closed under former President Donald Trump’s administration.
On Monday, the Department of Health announced it was reopening a facility in Carrizo Springs, Texas to house up to 700 migrants ages 13 to 17.
The move has led to accusations of hypocrisy on the part of Biden, who slammed Trump in the strongest terms for using the facility and others like it.
Unbounded hypocrisy
Critics of Trump’s immigration policies accused his administration of “putting kids in cages” and “separating families,” but now they are forced to eat their words or admit that there is really no other way to deal with the 700 unaccompanied minors who will be housed at the facility until they can be placed with “sponsors.”
Psaki said the facility was being used because of COVID protocols to keep the children safe. She said that “it’s a temporary reopening during COVID-19, our intention is very much to close it, but we want to make sure we can follow COVID protocols.”
In other words, we attacked Trump for doing it, but it’s fine if Biden does the very same thing.
After all, Trump’s predecessor Barack Obama was the one who opened the facility in the first place in 2014.
Harris said housing children a “crime against humanity”
In 2018, Vice President Kamala Harris called Trump’s use of the facilities a “crime against humanity,” and now she’s participating in an administration doing the very same thing.
Such hypocritical actions would have ruined politicians in previous generations, but now, people just seem to expect and overlook hypocrisy from the elected officials in their own party while simultaneously yelling at the top of their lungs about the hypocrisy of those on the other side.
If Biden is just doing what he has to do to care for these children on a temporary basis, then why wasn’t Trump given that same benefit of the doubt in the same situation?
Because the double standard lives on, and nowhere was it more blatant than when it was used against Trump.
