Kellyanne Conway says ‘it certainly is possible’ Trump will be impeached

Is Kellyanne Conway giving up the fight against impeachment?

Speaking to reporters on Friday, the top White House aide “was asked if President [Donald] Trump’s impeachment was ‘inevitable,'” according to the Washington Examiner — and while she cast some doubt on whether Democrats could get all the votes they need, Conway conceded that Trump’s ouster “certainly is possible.”

“It certainly is possible if Nancy Pelosi has 218 votes,” Conway said of the House speaker. “She has more Democrats than 218 [in the House].”

But according to Conway, even Pelosi “has said herself, ‘We don’t know that we’re going to impeach the president.'”

“They know the votes are not there”

According to Conway, whether or not the measure passes the House will depend on how some key Democrats vote — and at this point, it’s practically impossible to predict who will take which side, especially considering that the president has yet to even begin his defense.

“It really depends on how those 31 Democrats in those districts where they won and Trump–Pence won,” Conway reasoned. “If they’re going to go home and say, ‘I haven’t done the following things I promised I’d do, but I did impeach the president.'”

But even if those Dems do vote to impeach Trump, the war will be far from over. As Conway noted (and as countless commentators have pointed out since the start of the impeachment inquiry), Democrats need the backing of the Senate in order to oust Trump from the Oval Office — and that could be a challenge.

“They know the votes are not there in the Senate,” Conway said Friday, according to The Hill. “So, if you’re going to impeach the president are you going to remove him? Unlikely.”

“Republicans have never been more unified”

Still, Conway admitted Friday that she’s ready for whatever happens.

“I’m prepared for the president to be impeached,” she said, “and I’m prepared for the votes to not go that way depending on what the evidence says.”

For his part, President Trump has maintained his innocence and denied any allegations of wrongdoing, while noting that Republicans are unified behind him. (All House Republicans voted against the House resolution to officially authorize the impeachment inquiry, according to The New York Times.)
