Democratic California Gov. Gavin Newsom is facing a growing recall effort that has steadily gained momentum and could achieve the required number of signatures ahead of a March 2021 deadline that would place the measure on the ballot next year and let the state’s voters decide if Newsom should continue to be the governor.
According to Fox News contributor Tammy Bruce, the recall petition is a “nonpartisan issue” that is supported by a broad range of Californians for a variety of reasons, none of which look good for Newsom’s prospects of being able to outlast or survive the recall.
The recall effort was first launched in June in opposition to Newsom’s strict coronavirus pandemic response of stay-at-home orders and mandatory business closures, and picked up steam in recent months after Newsom was spotted with friends and lobbyists at an expensive restaurant in violation of his own orders regarding social distancing and wearing masks.
“I think it’ll be successful”
While co-hosting Fox & Friends, Bruce, who was involved in the 2003 effort to recall and remove California’s Democratic Gov. Gray Davis, strongly implied that the recall effort against Newsom could similarly find success, given how much Newsom had angered so many Californians over the course of the year.
“The concern is that Gavin Newsom is doing things that benefit that lobbyist and those interests as opposed to benefiting the people of California,” Bruce said. “How do you know? Because the people of California are in dire straits and Gavin Newsom and his friends are not.”
She continued, “It’s the economy, the handling of COVID, the corruption, this lobbyist guy. Californians don’t like it and I think it’ll be successful.”
“Tired of being dictated to”
Los Angeles’ KACB reported that the petition to recall Gov. Newsom has gained recent momentum in large part due to backlash over his secretive dinner at The French Laundry restaurant in Napa Valley — when he had told Californians to avoid congregating and to stay at home — as well as the extension and expansion of his various coronavirus restrictions on the populace.
“This is about citizens who are tired of being dictated to every single day and being told, ‘You cannot go outside,’ ‘You cannot do this,’ ‘You cannot do that,'” Randy Economy, a chief organizer of the recall effort, told KABC.
In the view of Economy, The French Laundry incident, which led to a surge of several hundred thousand additional petition signatures, was the last straw for a lot of Californians. “It has resonated. It’s about the arrogance of power,” he said.
Petition gaining support
According to Sacramento Fox affiliate KTXL, the recall effort just received a huge boost of support from Kevin Faulconer, the popular former Republican mayor of San Diego, who said, “We need a new governor” and strongly hinted that he could throw his hat in the ring if Newsom was eventually recalled.
He also said The French Laundry dinner party was more than the average Californian was willing to bear. “The hypocrisy that we saw, this obviously touched a nerve for a lot of Californians who are trying to do everything that they can to follow the rules,” Faulconer said.
According to the official “Recall Gavin” website, the petition has already garnered more than 911,000 signatures toward a required 1.5 million needed by the deadline of March 10, 2021, to reach the ballot for voters to consider.
