Georgia voters will hit the polls Tuesday to cast their ballots in the long-awaited Senate runoff races between GOP Sens. Kelly Loeffler and David Perdue and their Democrat challengers, Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff, respectively.
But while the two Dems may be hoping to emerge victorious, one high-profile Republican is warning that if Warnock and Ossoff both come out on top, the real winner will be Kamala Harris.
This is because the runoff elections will decide control of the Senate; according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, if Republicans win either race, they’ll maintain a slim majority in the upper chamber. But if Dems win both, the Senate will be tied 50–50, leaving Vice President-elect Harris to cast the deciding vote.
“It’s not just about liberty”
It’s a possibility that South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem (R) never wants to see come to fruition. According to the Washington Examiner, Noem campaigned in the Peach State on Sunday, where she urged Republicans to get out and vote.
“If we don’t win these Senate seats, the deciding vote in the Senate is going to be Kamala Harris, the most extreme liberal senator we have,” Noem cautioned, as the Examiner reported.
“We don’t want that individual breaking ties in the Senate on the most controversial pieces of legislation in this country,” she added.
According to Noem, life as we know it could be drastically different by this time next year if Georgians make the wrong decision at the polls on Tuesday. “I’ve been telling folks this is not just about our Constitution,” the South Dakota governor said.
“It’s not just about liberty,” she added, according to the Examiner. “It’s about what does life look like a year from now if you elect the wrong person.”
A conservative firebrand
Noem, for her part, has long been a target of criticism from the left for her refusal to enact in her state the strict lockdown measures seen in other parts of the country amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
“There are many states that do have mask mandates in place and some that do not, but I look at their rate of spread and the fact is, is that cases are increasing in many of those states as well,” Noem said at a presser in November, according to Fox News.
She went on to stress that she would not impose “a policy or a mandate just looking to make people feel good,” but would allow localities to make their own decisions. It’s a strategy that’s continued to earn her the ire of liberals, Noem said — but it’s the haters who made her famous, after all.
“The only reason you know who I am is that the liberals have been busy beating me up for every single decision I’ve been making for my people in South Dakota,” Noem said Sunday in Georgia, according to the Washington Examiner. “My people are happy. They are happy because they’re free.”
