President Donald Trump has made his choice for the next recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
According to NPR, the White House announced Monday that Trump had awarded the nation’s highest civilian honor to California Rep. Devin Nunes, a Republican who was steadfast in his defense of Trump during the infamous Russia collusion probe.
“A very important medal”
News of the president’s plans was first reported Sunday.
Fox News said Trump had been mulling the idea since at least 2018, when he brought it up during an interview on Fox & Friends.
“If this turns out as everyone thinks it will, Devin Nunes should get the Medal of Honor,” the president had said, according to Fox.
“What he’s gone through, and his bravery, he should get a very important medal,” the president added. “Maybe we’ll call it the Medal of Freedom because we actually give them — they’re high awards for civilians, and he’s done amazing.”
“The media smeared him”
Trump followed through on Monday, with the White House lauding Nunes as “a public servant of unmatched talent, unassailable integrity, and unwavering resolve. He uncovered the greatest scandal in American history,” they added.
The White House also said Nunes “had the fortitude to take on the media, the FBI, the Intelligence Community, the Democrat Party, foreign spies, and the full power of the Deep State,” and “paid a price for his courage.”
“The media smeared him and liberal activists opened a frivolous and unjustified ethics investigation, dragging his name through the mud for eight long months,” the White House said, according to NPR.
In good company
As Breitbart noted, Nunes was later cleared of any and all wrongdoing for his actions exposing what many have called the Trump–Russia collusion “hoax.” His efforts “led to the eventual unraveling of the Russia collusion hoax and discrediting of its main backers,” the outlet reported Sunday.
Nunes also spearheaded efforts to fight back against Democrats’ attempt to impeach and remove President Trump in late 2019 and early 2020.
For this, he joins the ranks of former Kansas Rep. Jim Ryun (R), Gen. Jack Keane, and others who have received the Medal of Freedom from President Trump, according to Fox. Congressman Jim Jordan, an Ohio Republican, is also set to receive the award this week.
