With just hours to go before the Georgia runoffs, Rep. Doug Collins (R-GA) is calling on Republican voters not to get complacent.
Even as he projected an Election Day surge, the lawmaker warned ahead of Tuesday’s Senate races that “not voting is letting the Democrats win,” Fox News reported.
Collins predicts Election Day surge
Democrats must win both of their challenges to Republican incumbent Sens. Kelly Loeffler and David Perdue to win a narrow majority in the Senate, with Vice President-elect Kamala Harris as the tie-breaking vote.
Collins, who came in third in the initial November race for Loeffler’s seat, predicted a “very close race” on Tuesday that he believes Republicans will win, but only if they show up in sufficient numbers to overcome an early voting advantage for the Democrats.
“I think what it comes down to now is that turnout on Jan. 5 on Tuesday,” Collins told Fox News’ Fox & Friends Weekend. “And I believe that is when the conservative voices that typically vote on Election Day are going to come out.”
Collins: Don’t stay home
There has been some speculation about depressed Republican turnout amid anger with a presidential race that President Donald Trump, and many of his supporters, say was rigged. Democratic nominee Joe Biden was certified the winner in Georgia by a narrow margin.
Collins urged Republicans who are thinking about staying home on Tuesday to reconsider, emphasizing the consequences of letting a pair of radical, pro-abortion socialists into the Senate.
“Georgia understands what’s at stake here,” he said. “You have Jon Ossoff, who’s a trust-fund socialist. You have Raphael Warnock, who is a pastor who believes that abortion is OK. There’s just things that are really contradictory to conservative lifestyle in Georgia.”
“People want to make sure that their election and their vote matter,” he added. “Not voting is letting the Democrats win this argument… We’ve got to make sure our voters turn out.”
Trump to return
Early voting in Georgia has set records, with more than 3 million having already voted, Atlanta’s WAGA reported.
The presidential race saw historic turnout that skewed heavily towards Democrats in mail-in and early voting, while Republicans voted more on Election Day.
Trump will return to Georgia on Monday evening for his second rally in the state since Election Day.
