Among the new rules unveiled by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) to govern the nation’s representatives, is a call for an end to “gendered language,” Breitbart reported.
House Rules Committee member Rep. Tom Cole (R-OK) didn’t mince words concerning his views of Pelosi’s House rules package.
“I am very disappointed by the proposed House Rules for the 117th Congress put forward by the Democratic majority,” Cole said in a statement.
He continued, “This package is a blatant and cowardly assault on the voices and views of the Republican minority, which represents a growing number of seats in the House following the general election in November.”
“Dark day”
Cole said that Pelosi is using her power as speaker to clamp down on those who hold different views in Congress.
“Alarmingly, the package includes eliminating the longstanding motion to recommit in its current form and censoring opposing ideas,” Cole said in the statement.
“Clearly, this proves that Democrats are afraid of Republican ideas, and they cannot effectively defend their own points of view,” he continued, adding that Pelosi “knows she is unable to rally and effectively lead her own slimmed down caucus.”
Cole also warned that the rules are vulnerable to abuse, saying they are “likely to be enforced in a way that creates a double standard between the majority and minority.”
“This is a dark day for the preservation of free and thoughtful debate in the institution and indeed, all members elected by the people and for the people,” he concluded.
Getting rid of “gendered terms”
In a joint statement released last week by House Committee on Rules Chairman Rep. James P. McGovern (D-MA), Pelosi expressed pride in “introducing this visionary rules package, which reflects the views and values of the full range of our historically diverse House Democratic Majority.”
This will include acknowledging “all gender identities by changing pronouns and familial relationships in the House rules to be gender neutral.” As a consequence, “gendered terms” such as “father,” “mother,” “son,” daughter,” “husband,” “wife,” “brother,” and “sister” are slated to be replaced with “gender neutral” language.
House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) derided the move in a tweet on Friday, saying, “This is stupid. Signed, – A father, son, and brother.”
