Pelosi’s new House rules do not ban guns, in win for Republicans who want to carry in the Capitol

Democrats accused incoming Republican lawmaker Lauren Boebert of pulling a “stunt” when she protested an attempt to stop her from wielding her Glock pistol on Capitol Hill.

The Republican seems to have won the day after new House rules from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) did not include a gun ban, Fox News reported.

Armed at the Capitol

Boebert sent a letter to Pelosi and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) on Friday, pushing back on an effort by 21 Democrats to nix a 1967 rule that exempts lawmakers from a ban on guns inside the Capitol.

Democrats said the rule created “needless risk,” but Boebert, who is known for her fiery gun rights activism, was joined by 82 other Republicans in protesting the ban.

“I refuse to give up my Second Amendment rights,” Boebert said. “I’m a 5-foot tall, 100-pound mom with four children and will be walking to work and serving in one of the most dangerous cities in the U.S. I choose to defend my family and my life with all of the force the Constitution provides.”

“I will not let a bunch of gun-grabbing House Democrats take away my constitutional right to protect myself,” she added.

Pelosi, who was re-elected as House speaker on Sunday, did not appear to include the gun ban in the new House rules, Fox News noted.

Lawmakers cite threats

The 1967 rule allows lawmakers to carry guns on Capitol grounds but not in the legislative chambers, Newsweek noted.

In their letter, the Republicans mentioned crime in Washington and past attacks on lawmakers, including Rep. Steve Scalise (R-LA), who was shot at a baseball practice in 2017.

“Protecting the safety and lives of Members of Congress is of the utmost concern and isn’t a partisan issue. We ask that you stand with Members of Congress on both sides of the aisle that support the lawful and current Capitol Police Board regulations that have existed for more than half a century,” the letter states.

Recently, Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) both had their homes vandalized amid anger with Congress over coronavirus relief.

Boebert beat Republican Rep. Scott Tipton in a primary and went on to defeat Democratic candidate Diane Mitsch Bush in the race for Colorado’s 3rd District.
