Trump overtakes Obama as most admired man in 2020 Gallup survey

President Donald Trump may not have won a second term in office, but he did unseat former President Barack Obama in another important contest that is held every year.

Trump was named the most admired man for the first time during his presidency in an annual Gallup poll, beating Obama for the title and depriving him of the title for the first time in 12 years.

Eighteen percent of respondents in the survey identified Trump as their most-admired man, including 48% of all Republicans surveyed.

The sitting U.S. president has been at the top of the list in 60 out of 74 years, including every year of Obama’s presidency and seven of George W. Bush’s eight years (not 2008). Trump was second to Obama in 2017 and 2018.

Trump more admired than Biden despite election loss

The poll result, with Trump being three times as admired as Biden, makes Trump’s election loss all the more unexplainable. Clearly, while many people admire him, many also revile him.

At least, that’s the conclusion that seems to make the most sense.

Furthermore, Trump has made the top 10 list for the survey 10 times, including four times before he entered politics. Biden has only been in the top 10 twice, in 2018 and 2020.

Trump has still not conceded to Biden even after the Electoral College voted and gave Biden 306 electoral votes. 270 votes are needed to win the presidency.

Other top vote-getters

Other top vote-getters in the survey were Obama with 15%, President-elect Joe Biden with 6%, and coronavirus task force member Dr. Anthony Fauci with 3%.

Two percent of respondents chose Pope Francis, and receiving 1% each were  Tesla CEO Elon Musk, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), Microsoft founder Bill Gates, Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James and the Dalai Lama.

The late Rev. Billy Graham made the list 61 times before his 2018 death, the most of any person since the poll has been taken. Former President Jimmy Carter is the most-represented living person with 29 mentions.

Twenty-one percent of the 1,018 respondents offered no response to the question, while 11 percent named a friend or relative.
