Democrat party boss gives bad news to AOC

Another wet blanket has just been thrown on Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s (D-NY) political ambitions.

The New York Post reports that Jay Jacobs, the chairman of New York’s Democrat Party, has warned Ocasio-Cortez not to challenge Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) in the 2022 election.

“It would be a loss”

Jacobs comments came during a recent interview with the Post. There, he talked about the possibility of Ocasio-Cortez challenging Schumer in 2022.

“I think it would be a primary driven by ambition more than by need,” he said. “Chuck Schumer has been a progressive force in the state for decades. She has a constituency that admires her and supports her, and they’re in her community, and I think it would be a loss for them if she were to do that.”

The Post reports Jacobs as then saying that Ocasio-Corte would “absolutely” lose to Schumer.

Jacobs also said that he never met Ocasio-Cortez, but that he “would look forward to doing that” and would be “open to that at any time.”

Looking ahead

One of the big questions of 2022 will be whether Ocasio-Cortez makes a run at Schumer (D-NY). Thus far, she has avoided any definitive statements on the subject. But, it is clear that she is keeping this option open.

Earlier this year, when asked whether she would challenge Schumer, Ocasio-Cortez responded, “I don’t know.” She added that “right now, you know, my concern is just making sure that I’m taking care of everything that’s right in front of me and just making sure that I earned the honor and the privilege of serving New York 14th Congressional District for another term.”

More recently, Ocasio-Cortez told Vanity Fair, “I don’t know if I’m really going to be staying in the House forever, or if I do stay in the House, what that would look like. I don’t see myself really staying where I’m at for the rest of my life.”

And, Ocasio-Cortez also told The Intercept recently that “I do think that we need new leadership in the Democratic Party.”

Pick your poison

Jacob’s opinion, here – that Ocasio-Cortez would not have a chance against Schumer – stands in contrast to that of President Donald Trump. In February, the president tweeted, “I think AOC will run against Schumer and I think she’ll kick his ass!”

We’ll have to keep an eye on this one going forward. But, from a Republican point of view, the race between Ocasio-Cortez and Schumer would be a battle of two evils, and it is hard to say which one is the lesser.
