The mainstream media and Big Tech have done their worst to ignore and bury stories that report on Hunter Biden’s international business dealings and how those deals may have impacted or compromised his father, former Vice President Joe Biden.
Despite that effort to squash all inquiries into Hunter Biden, Rep. Ken Buck (R-CO) is calling on Attorney General William Barr to appoint a special counsel to fully investigate Hunter’s international business activities, Fox News reported.
Special counsel warranted
Buck tweeted Monday, “.@TheJusticeDept must appoint a Special Counsel to investigate Hunter Biden’s conduct and contents of his laptop. This needs to be investigated free from political interference. No matter who is in the White House.”
The laptop referenced by Buck as belonging to Hunter Biden was discovered in the final weeks leading up to the election and was reported to contain data detailing Biden’s foreign business dealings, often with dubious characters with questionable ties to hostile and rival nations.
The laptop’s exposure raised questions regarding how much Biden knew about his son’s business dealings and whether he had personally benefited from the alleged financial arrangements and transactions.
Defending the republic
Fox News reported that it had exclusively obtained a copy of the letter Buck sent to Barr on Monday that insisted the attorney general “appoint a Special Counsel to investigate Mr. Hunter Biden’s conduct and the contents of his laptop that is currently in the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s possession.”
“This investigation is critical to defending the integrity of our republic and ensuring a potential Biden Administration will not be the subject of undue foreign interference,” the congressman wrote.
He continued, “Americans have the right to know whether Mr. Biden’s reported ties to foreign governments will make him the subject of blackmail attempts or other nefarious efforts to undermine U.S. national security or otherwise improperly influence American foreign policy.”
Investigate and prosecute
Buck reminded Barr that it was well within his purview to name a special counsel tasked to “investigate and prosecute any matter that would present a conflict of interest for the Department or other extraordinary circumstances,” and drew comparisons to the appointment of Robert Mueller as special counsel to probe the allegations of collusion between Russia and President Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign.
“We must guarantee the integrity of our government and the security of our republic,” Buck wrote. “As such, I urge the DOJ to appoint a Special Counsel to investigate Hunter Biden’s actions and the potentially incriminating contents of his laptop to ensure this important investigation will be completed.”
By design, special counsels are difficult for an administration to get rid of once established, as they can only be fired by an attorney general for a specific cause and are granted a measure of independence and protection from the administration overseeing it.
This request from Buck comes on the heels of the revelation from Barr that he had appointed U.S. Attorney John Durham as a special counsel to ensure that his criminal review of the origins of the FBI’s anti-Trump Russia investigation can continue regardless of whether Biden takes office or Trump remains president.
