Americans who want to see Republicans hold the Senate in the next Congress are stepping up and raising money for the cause — and with these numbers, it’s looking like Democrats aren’t going to know what hit them.
The Washington Examiner reported Friday that the GOP’s top fundraising website, WinRed, has seen over $800 million in donations over the last two months as Republicans David Perdue and Kelly Loeffler fight to hold onto their Senate seats in a pair of runoff races in Georgia.
According to Politico, President Donald Trump himself appeared in Georgia on Saturday to stump for the GOP Senate hopefuls, whose upcoming races will determine which party has control of the upper chamber.
“There’s never been a case where a state has had this prominence on Senate races. Never together, and this is something that’s very important and you have to get out and you have to vote,” Trump reportedly told rallygoers over the weekend. “If you don’t vote, the socialists and the communists win.”
Donations pouring in
In the weeks ahead of Trump’s Georgia event, conservative Americans were already putting their money where it’s needed most. Created in response to Democrat fundraising site ActBlue, WinRed took in $804 million in donations in October and November, according to the Washington Examiner.
“In November, WinRed reported that it managed to raise $374 million through over 7 million donations,” the Examiner reported Friday. “The average donation made was $48.62.”
October saw even better numbers. The Examiner reported:
Republicans raising $430 million from over 9 million donations — the average contribution for that month was $46.40.
The GOP still has a month to pull in funds for the runoffs, which will be held on Jan. 5.
America’s future at stake
In the meantime, both parties are campaigning vigorously for the Georgia runoffs — and given what’s at stake, it’s easy to see why. Barring some major change, it’s looking like Democrat Joe Biden will be America’s next president, and with Democrats holding onto the House, Republicans need to retain control of the Senate to have any hopes of slowing Dems’ increasingly progressive agenda.
That means Perdue and Loeffler have to win in their face-offs against Democrats Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock, respectively.
If Republicans win either one of those races, they will control the Senate. But if they lose both, the GOP and Dems will be tied 50-50 in the upper chamber, putting would-be Vice President Kamala Harris in the position to break a tie.
It all has President Trump urging Georgia Republicans to turn out in January 2021. “Friends of mine say we are not going to vote because we are angry about the presidential election,” he said Saturday, according to Politico. “Don’t listen to my friends.”
