Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden continued to dismiss a growing scandal involving his son as a Russian disinformation campaign in comments about the matter this week.
Responding to reporters on Tuesday, the prospective president said he would not interfere with an ongoing federal investigation if he is successful in taking office next month.
Biden continues to face questions
Specifically, Biden asserted that he will not be discussing the matter with candidates being considered to lead the Department of Justice under his administration.
Asserting that the attorney general should not be the “president’s lawyer,” he expressed his latest denial of any involvement in Hunter Biden’s dubious international business deals.
Based on the contents of a laptop discarded by the younger Biden, the New York Post rocked the final weeks of the election season by fueling new speculation and allegations against the influential family.
Regarding the former vice president, emails released as part of the Post report suggest Joe Biden met with an executive from a Ukrainian energy firm for which his son served as a board member.
The elder Biden was asked this week whether his views concerning those emails had changed since his pre-election assertion that the claims were all part of a Russian propaganda campaign.
“Totally on its own”
“Yes, yes, yes,” Biden responded. “God love ya, man. You are a one-horse pony. I tell ya. Thank you. Thank you.”
He went on to elaborate on his stance, adding: “I promise you my justice department will be totally on its own making its judgments about how to proceed.”
Even as he dismissed the severity of the probe itself, Biden said that he would not be speaking to candidates for the attorney general position about it. An aide previously stated as much, insisting that the former vice president is looking for an apolitical Justice Department.
“No, no I guarantee you I’m going to do what I said,” Biden asserted. “The attorney general of the United States of America is not the president’s lawyer. I will appoint someone I expect to enforce the law as the law is written, not guided by me.”
While President Donald Trump’s relationship with Attorney General William Barr has been interpreted by some critics as too cozy, it is not the first such case. Eric Holder, who served as former President Barack Obama’s attorney general, reportedly referred to himself as the ex-president’s “wingman.”
