Report: Federal prosecutors discussed demanding access to Rudy Giuliani’s emails

Prior to serving as the mayor of New York City, Trump attorney Rudy Giuliani gained national prominence for being a United States attorney who targeted the mafia.

However, NBC News reported Monday that federal authorities are now targeting Giuliani with a “very active” investigation.

Prosecutors want Giuliani’s emails

NBC’s report cited two anonymous sources “familiar with the probe” who said prosecutors in the Southern District of New York have discussed demanding legal access to Giuliani’s emails.

It explained approval from the Department of Justice is required before a judge can be asked to compel Giuliani to turn over the communications, some of which may be protected under attorney-client privilege.

According to the sources, the Southern District of New York prosecutors “have been in communication” with Washington DOJ officials regarding the matter.

Although the exact nature of this inquiry is said to be “unclear,” NBC News did note that a Wall Street Journal report from October of last year that prosecutors were interested in Giuliani’s bank records as part of an investigation into his activities in Ukraine.

Giuliani tied to Parnas, Fruman

Giuliani was formerly associated with two Ukrainian-American figures, Lev Parnas and Igor Fruman, both of whom have themselves come under federal scrutiny.

Each has pleaded not guilty to charges of campaign finance fraud, with Parnas also denying allegations that he engaged in wire fraud conspiracy.

According to a DOJ press release put out in September, Parnas and another individual swindled people through a company called “Fraud Guarantee.”

The release explained that while this outfit “purported to insure investors against corporate fraud,” it actually “misled investors as to what would be done with their money.”

It all goes back to Burisma

Giuliani’s involvement with Parnas and Fruman dates back to his effort to investigate possible corrupt behavior on the part of Joe and Hunter Biden regarding the Ukrainian oil and gas firm Burisma.

Hunter Biden, son of Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden, was formerly a board member with the company, and last year the Russian news network RT released footage of Joe Biden bragging about how he used the threat of withholding American aid to pressure Ukraine’s government into firing a prosecutor who was looking into Burisma.
