Biden assembles team of establishment Dems to help him undo Trump policies: Report

If his party doesn’t win the Senate in January, Joe Biden may be left to advance much of his agenda through executive authority.

Anticipating obstruction in Congress, Biden is assembling a sinister team of liberal policy wonks to help his administration quickly reverse Donald Trump’s agenda, The Hill reported Sunday.

Undoing Trump’s agenda

Biden has made no secret of his desire to undo Trump’s policies, and there is a possibility that, much like Trump, he will lean on executive power to enact many of his policies.

The Democrat could take a range of regulatory actions to restore “Title X” abortion funding that was nixed by Trump, solidify protections for illegal immigrants, and target Trump’s efforts to undermine Obamacare, among other moves, according to U.S. News & World Report.

Trump’s critics have slammed the president for paring back environmental regulations, and Biden will certainly work to undo those efforts as well, The Hill notes.

In a sign of his commitment to confronting what he has called the “existential threat of our time,” Biden recently announced a climate change team led by “climate czar” Gina McCarthy, a former Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) chief responsible for president Obama’s Clean Power Plan and other environmental rules, The Hill reported.

Biden’s pick to lead the EPA is Michael Regan, North Carolina’s top environmental regulator and a former EPA staffer under Presidents Clinton and George W. Bush, according to The Hill.

Biden leans on the Dem establishment

Controversial California Attorney General Xavier Becerra (D), a staunch advocate of  Obamacare and abortion rights known for his crusade against religious groups, is Biden’s choice to lead the Department of Health and Human Services.

His pick to lead the Department of Homeland Security, Alejandro Mayorkas, was responsible for crafting the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program that Trump attempted to abolish. Biden has promised to reinstate DACA and eliminate Trump’s immigration policies, such as the “Remain in Mexico” agreement, according to CBS News.

Notably, many of Biden’s picks are drawn from the Democratic Party establishment, with backgrounds in the corporate sector and an emphasis on government experience (many worked in the Barack Obama administration).

“The overall theme of Biden’s picks have been experience in government, and that’s a contrast to the Trump administration,” Rutgers University professor Stuart Shapiro told The Hill.

“I do think he is looking for people who are going to know how to work the machinery of government to get things done,” Shapiro added.
