Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) talks a lot about taxing the wealthy, and now, she’s selling merchandise to get the point across.
According to the Daily Caller, the far-left Democrat is under fire for selling a $58 sweatshirt that says, “Tax the Rich,” among other pricey pieces.
“Drink water, don’t be racist”
Ocasio-Cortez announced Wednesday that the sweatshirt was available for pre-order at her online shop, where Sandernistas can buy clothing with sayings like, “Drink water, don’t be racist” and “The Green New Deal.”

For the bold, there’s also an “Abolish ICE” baseball cap. But according to the Daily Caller, it was a $58 “Tax the Rich” crewneck that attracted the most attention from critics.
AOC under fire
Many said it was ironic — and more than a little tone-deaf — that a self-described “democratic socialist” slapped an anti-capitalist slogan on an overpriced commodity. Ocasio-Cortez has been the target of similar criticism from time to time, with many pointing out that her socialist, revolutionary messaging hasn’t always jived with a lifestyle that seems more bourgeoise.
Some saw her latest venture as an example of “radical chic.”
“A $60 sweater with the slogan ‘Tax the Rich’ is precisely what you’d expect well-heeled liberal denizens of New York’s Upper East Side to wear to brunch — it’s practically lifted from Tom Wolfe’s Radical Chic,” The Daily Wire’s Harry Khachatrian opined a tweet.
Ocasio-Cortez remains defiant
Since her rise to Congress in 2018, Ocasio-Cortez has become the public face of the Democratic Party’s progressive wing, and she has continued to draw controversy with her activism, even prompting criticism from former President Barack Obama, who recently said that “snappy slogans” like “defund the police” are politically damaging to the left, according to The Sun.
True to form, Ocasio-Cortez sent a defiant message to the Republicans “freaking out” that her clothing is not made with “slave-wage labor.”
“Republicans are freaking out [because] we don’t use slave-wage labor for merch that funds grassroots organizing,” she tweeted Thursday. “But what’s the difference between Trump’s merch and ours? Ours is made in the U.S. (& for GOP who joke that we shld [sic] give [t-shirts] for free, we actually do — just volunteer).”
For good measure, she added, “Oh, and by the way: Tax the Rich.”
