‘Undignified victory lap’: Ex-Cuomo aide shreds NY governor for hawking book during pandemic

Democratic New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo has faced consistent backlash over his response to the state’s coronavirus crisis, mostly from conservatives critical of everything from his policies regarding nursing homes to his new book boasting of his “leadership” throughout the pandemic.

As Breitbart reported, however, some of the criticism is coming from his own side of the aisle, with even one of his former aides joining in on the mockery of her former boss’s arrogance and incompetence.

“Milking his 15 minutes of fame”

Alexis Grenell, who served as Cuomo’s deputy director of intergovernmental affairs during his tenure as the state’s attorney general, made her position clear in a recent op-ed.

She wrote for The Nation that the governor, whom she dubbed “St. Andrew of Covid,” had been “milking his 15 minutes of fame for an extra 30.”

Grenell went on to slam his recent “Trump-style tantrum” upon taking a few basic questions from reporters regarding the status of New York City schools.

Cuomo insisted at the time that schools would not be closed just hours before they were, and his one-time aide asserted that he has previously “blown a gasket” in confrontations with reporters. According to Grenell, he routinely dismissed and “reflexively insulted” any critic.

As for his decision to write and promote a book amid an ongoing public health crisis in his state, Grenell was similarly incensed, writing: “It all boils down to this: Any dissent is a partisan attack on our very lives, and Andrew Cuomo is our only hope. To solidify the narrative, he’s even written a self-congratulatory book at what he calls ‘half-time’ in the crisis. Kind of like how every coach puts out a press release mid-game and Winston Churchill wrote the history of World War II in 1943. Oh, wait…”

“America’s best governor on television”

She compared Democratic New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio favorably to Cuomo, asserting that the latter’s “curated image is more than half the reason he’s the dominant player over the mayor, but he still can’t seem to keep his vanity in check.”

Further criticizing his decision to write a book Grenell called “an undignified victory lap,” she declared that Cuomo has underscored the notion that “it was always more about presentation than substance” throughout his career.

It is worth noting that some of Cuomo’s conservative critics have voiced very similar sentiments.

The Federalist’s David Marcus, for example, joked that Cuomo “is not a competent governor of New York, but he does play one on TV,” thus validating his Emmy win for a series of coronavirus-related public addresses.

“The reason Cuomo so dearly deserved his winged Emmy statue is precisely because, despite his failings of leadership, he was fantastic on television,” Marcus wrote. “It is all a bit strange, isn’t it? Andrew Cuomo is America’s best governor on television and its worst in real life.”
