Rumors swirl that Trump could launch 2024 White House bid during Biden’s inauguration

According to Fox News, President Donald Trump is continuing to challenge the results of this year’s presidential race in a number of critical swing states, though he told reporters Friday that he will “certainly” leave the White House if they fail.

But even if that happens, Trump might still have a path to victory. A new report from the Daily Beast revealed that Trump may be eyeing another bid for president in 2024 — and insiders have suggested he could be planning to announce the big news on Joe Biden’s Inauguration Day.

Citing “three people familiar with the conversations,” the left-leaning publication claimed in a Friday report that Trump has been discussing ways to undermine Biden’s presidency. One avenue would be by launching a White House run as Biden takes his own oath of office.

Another term for Trump?

Those close to the president seem to be preparing for the possibility of another campaign. The Daily Beast reported that some of Trump’s “closest associates have already started surveying prominent donors to get a sense of who would be with him, or perhaps against him, if he chose to run in the 2024 election.”

If that is the case, they may find good news. A Saturday article from The Hill noted that Trump appears to be retaining high levels of support among members of the GOP, with a recent poll from Seven Letter Insight showing that as many as 66% of Republicans would back him if he ran for president again.

The Hill went on to reference a similar survey from Morning Consult and Politico that indicated a Trump run for the White House in 2024 already has the support of 54% of the Republican Party.

And Trump may have the media’s help in boosting those figures. The Daily Beast reported Friday:

According to two sources with direct knowledge of the matter, the president has privately bragged that he’d still remain in the spotlight, even if Biden is in the Oval Office, in part because the news media will keep regularly covering him since — as Trump has assessed — he gets the news outlets ratings and those same outlets find Biden “boring.”

He wouldn’t be the first

As far as this year’s race, Trump told reporters Thursday that he doesn’t know “what is going to happen,” according to The Hill. “I know one thing,” he said, “Joe Biden did not get 80 million votes.”

It’s a sentiment that his supporters seem to agree with. Politico reported on Nov. 9 that a separate Morning Consult poll had found some 70% of Republicans did not believe that the 2020 presidential election was conducted fairly.

“However, despite their lack of trust in the results, Republicans are split on whether or not the outcome will change,” Politico reported.

If he were to run again in 2024, Trump would not be the first president to seek two nonconsecutive terms. Democrat Grover Cleveland retook the White House in 1892 after having been defeated in the election of 1888.

According to a biography on the White House’s website, Cleveland served as president from 1885-1889 and from 1893-1897.
