Republicans flip another congressional seat in California

Now several weeks after Election Day, Republicans are set to pick up another House seat in California.

Republican candidate David Valadao is projected to unseat incumbent Rep. TJ Cox (D-CA) in California’s 21st congressional district, The Associated Press reported.

Valadao held the 21st district seat from 2013 to 2018, but Cox won the seat from Valadao during the 2018 midterms.

The 21st district includes both Fresno and Kern counties, which are about 74% Hispanic. This makes Valadao “one of the few Republicans that will represent a majority-Hispanic district,” The Hill reported.

Other California successes

Valadao’s victory is one of four in which Republicans are projected to flip House seats in the deep blue state of California in the 2020 elections. The others are the 25th, 39th, and 48th districts.

Republican Mike Garcia is expected to win the 25th district. It includes parts of Los Angeles and Ventura counties, and it was a Republican stronghold before former Democrat Rep. Katie Hill won in 2018.

The 39th district, which includes parts of Los Angeles, Orange, and San Bernardino counties, has been won by Republican Young Kim. Kim beat out Rep. Gil Cisneros (D), who himself had flipped the seat in 2018.

California’s 48th district is going to Republican Michelle Steel. This district includes parts of Orange County, and it too was a Republican stronghold before Democrat Rep. Harley Rouda won it in 2018.

Overall results

If Republicans go on to win all four of these California seats, as projected, then they will have flipped more House seats in the deep blue state of California than in any other state this election, Fox News reported.

This would be a significant turnaround from the 2018 midterm elections when Democrats flipped seven House seats in California.

Countrywide, Democrats are expected to emerge from the 2020 elections with a majority in the House, but it appears as though it is going to be a much narrower majority. RealClearPolitics reported Democrats as having lost at least 11 seats in the House so far.

Although Democrats may have won the White House, the big blue wave that many were predicting and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi was hoping for never happened — and it wasn’t even close.
