Throughout the ongoing public health crisis, skeptics have frequently opined that the ruling class plans to use the current pandemic to consolidate as much power as possible.
As a recent example, Fox News Channel’s Tucker Carlson said on Thanksgiving that politicians and mainstream media outlets did not denounce holiday gatherings to the fullest extent possible because they see it as an opportunity.
“Oxymoronic doublespeak”
During a segment of his program, Carlson aired a clip of several leftist elected officials acknowledging in their own words that they hoped to use current crises to advance their progressive agendas.
Democratic Washington Gov. Jay Inslee urged progressives to “recognize the necessity” of using the pandemic to make headway on the issue of climate change.
“As long as public health bureaucrats are throwing around oxymoronic doublespeak like social distancing and flatten the curve, politicians have the cover they need to empower themselves and their friends,” Carlson proclaimed. “And that’s exactly what they’ve been doing.”
He went on to point out the perceived absurdity of certain guidelines meant to reduce the spread of COVID-19.
Two specific restrictions he cited as especially unfounded were a local ban in New York on touching other people’s tennis balls and a limit in Illinois to just two people per boat.
“All his enablers have to lose”
According to Carlson, the media is largely at fault for failing to report that Ron Klain, Democratic presidential hopeful Joe Biden’s pick to serve as chief of staff, was as former lobbyist and defender of the tech industry and will now have a direct line to the man who will possibly be the next commander in chief.
Big Tech, Carlson predicted, will have even more power during the next four years as a result of Biden’s partnership with the industry.
Furthermore, even some anti-Trump activists on the right are hoping that the left takes action against those who have supported the president over the past several years.
“It’s not only that Trump has to lose, but that all his enablers have to lose,” remarked Washington Post columnist Jennifer Rubin. “They have to — we have to collectively in essence, burn down the Republican Party.”
For his part, Trump took another swipe at the tech industry in a tweet this week decrying the legal protection afforded to some firms through a controversial section of federal code: “For purposes of National Security, Section 230 must be immediately terminated!!!”
