Poll finds that Trump is favored to be the Republican presidential candidate in 2024

A new poll suggests that even if President Donald Trump does go on to lose the 2020 presidential election, he would likely be the favorite for the Republican nomination in 2024.

The poll was recently conducted by McLaughlin Associates for Newsmax. “In a crowded field of 14 possible candidates for the 2024 Republican primary, no one comes close to President Trump,” according to pollster John McLaughlin.

The numbers

The poll was conducted between November 21st and 23rd. A 1,000 likely general election voters were asked who, among 14 candidates, they would prefer to be the Republican nominee for president in 2024.

President Trump was easily the favorite, receiving 53 percent of the vote. Others options included Vice President Mike Pence, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, Trump’s son Donald Jr., and others.

Finishing in second place behind President Trump were both Pence and Donald Trump Jr., who both received 20 percent of the vote. The margin of error was plus or minus 3.1 percentage points.

Different poll, same results

A similar poll was recently conducted by the Morning Consult on behalf of Politico.

That poll found that 53 percent favored President Trump to be the Republican nominee in 2024, should he lose in 2020. Again, in second place was Vice President Pence with 12 percent, and behind him was Donald Trump Jr. at 8 percent.

This poll was conducted, again, between the 21st and 23rd of November. 1,990 registered voters were surveyed, including 765 GOP voters. A margin of error, according to Newsmax, was only provided for the GOP subset. It was plus or minus 2 percentage points.

Looking forward

It ought to be made clear that the 2020 presidential election is still far from over. Here, we are only considering the possibilities should President Trump end up officially losing to Joe Biden.

The polls only tell us that President Trump, at the moment, would be favored to be the Republican presidential candidate in 2024. Another question altogether is whether Trump would be interested in running again.

It appears that the answer to the question is a resounding “yes,” he would be interested in running again.

Here’s what former acting White House chief of staff Mick Mulvaney said earlier in November: “He doesn’t like losing. There’s actually a non-zero chance that Donald Trump runs again in 2024 and Joe Biden does not … simply because of his age.”
