Democratic nominee Joe Biden plans to use the federal government’s purchasing power to push the sort of climate change agenda called for by the far left, The Washington Examiner reported.
The Biden administration would be able to push certain policies by using the federal government’s ability to favor certain goods and services over others.
According to the Examiner’s report, Biden would look to push a climate change agenda by purchasing green goods and services over non-green ones.
Bigger government
The Examiner specifically highlighted a section of “the Biden Plan for a Clean Energy Revolution and Environmental Justice.”
There, Biden pledged to use “the Federal government procurement system — which spends $500 billion every year — to drive towards 100% clean energy and zero-emissions vehicles.”
The Examiner also called attention to “The Biden Plan to Ensure the Future is ‘Made in All of America’ by All of America’s Workers.” The plan would expand the $500 billion federal procurement budget by another $400 billion over the course of Biden’s first term in office.
This increase, in large part, would be used to buy the kind of technologies that would help to make America the world’s clean energy leader, according to the Examiner. The big focus will likely be on renewable energy, as well as green infrastructure and industrial manufacturing.
What else to expect?
Biden has also already promised to reenter the United States into the Paris Climate Agreement.
President Donald Trump withdrew from this deal in 2017 for a number of reasons, the primary of which is that it was unfair to the United States while giving leeway to the world’s biggest polluters like China.
Biden has also announced that he has chosen John Kerry, the Obama administration’s secretary of state, to lead the way on climate change. Kerry, like many on the left, has been critical of the president’s decision to withdraw from the Paris agreement.
Stephen Moore, Distinguished Visiting Fellow, Project for Economic Growth, at The Heritage Foundation, warned of the harm the will come to American workers if Biden reenters the agreement. “The single biggest polluter in the world, by far, by far, is China and it doesn’t require China to do anything for another 10 years,” he said.
Moore continued, “Meanwhile, we have to shut down our coal plants, we have to shut down our oil and gas facilities that employ millions of workers, we have to use more expensive energy while China and India and Russia laugh behind our back.”
