Legendary Scottish actor Sean Connery passed away at his home in the Bahamas earlier this week, his family announced. He was 90 years old.
Connery’s son, Jason Connery, revealed to the BBC that his father had been “unwell for some time” and was surrounded by many members of his family.
Family confirms details
“We are all working at understanding this huge event as it only happened so recently, even though my dad has been unwell for some time,” the younger Connery explained. “A sad day for all who knew and loved my dad and a sad loss for all people around the world who enjoyed the wonderful gift he had as an actor,” he added.
Connery’s wife, Micheline, told the Daily Mail that the star had suffered from dementia. “It was no life for him,” she said. “He was not able to express himself latterly. At least he died in his sleep and it was just so peaceful. I was with him all the time and he just slipped away. It was what he wanted.”
A career spanning decades
Connery’s most iconic role was that of British spy Agent 007, James Bond, a role he first took up in 1962’s Dr. No. The actor went on to reprise the character in another five films.
Other memorable performances saw him working alongside actors Harrison Ford in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade as well as Kevin Costner in The Untouchables.
The Washington Examiner also quoted the co-producers of an upcoming new Bond film as expressing their condolences over the Connery’s passing. “We are devastated by the news of the passing of Sir Sean Connery,” Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli announced in a statement posted on social media.
“He was and shall always be remembered as the original James Bond whose indelible entrance into cinema history began when he announced those unforgettable words — ‘The name’s Bond … James Bond’ — he revolutionized the world with his gritty and witty portrayal of the sexy and charismatic secret agent,” they recalled.
The pair concluded by declaring that Connery was “undoubtedly largely responsible for the success of the film series and we shall be forever grateful to him.”
In addition to acting, Connery also pursued bodybuilding early in his career. As People magazine noted on Saturday, he claimed a third-place finish in the 1953 Mr. Universe competition. “Afterward, Connery went on to land his first-ever job, a chorus spot in a London-based touring company of South Pacific,” the publication stated.
President Donald Trump offered his condolences to the family in a post on Twitter, calling Connery “a great actor and an even greater man.”
….all I needed, everything went swimmingly from there. He was so highly regarded & respected in Scotland and beyond that years of future turmoil was avoided. Sean was a great actor and an even greater man. Sincere condolences to his family!
