‘Late, illegal ballots’: Republicans file suit in multiple states in response to voter fraud allegations

President Donald Trump is vowing to fight for every last vote as the 2020 presidential election appears headed to the judicial system before all the dust settles.

The president’s re-election campaign is launching a full-scale court battle in a bid to prevent what Trump says is a partisan effort to defraud the people’s vote, as reported by Politico.

Legal fights in multiple states

As Election Day drew to a close on Tuesday evening, Trump had amassed a lead in several critical battleground states. Many of those early advantages had all but evaporated by the following morning, however.

The development prompted cries of apparent fraud from the president and several key allies.

Nevertheless, the Trump campaign has maintained that he still has a path to the 270 electoral votes needed to win the election — citing in particular the swing states of Georgia, Nevada, and Pennslyvania, each of which remained in dispute as of Wednesday.

Of course, the legal fireworks actually preceded the election, most recently marking a loss for the GOP in Nevada on Tuesday.

That state’s Supreme Court dismissed the Trump campaign’s request to stop counting mail-in ballots in Clark County, the most populous in the state. The campaign alleged that poll watchers were prevented from performing their duties and that reviews of ballot signatures were not reliable.

Ballots continue to be counted

Meanwhile, Republicans in Pennsylvania filed suit in an attempt to throw out provisional ballots cast by voters whose absentee ballots were previously disqualified.

A congressional candidate in Montgomery County separately filed a lawsuit seeking to invalidate ballots that were amended after election officials reached out to voters.

By Wednesday afternoon, the Trump campaign had declared victory in Pennslyvania and was mounting legal fights elsewhere across the nation — including a demand for a recount in Wisconsin after news outlets called the state for Biden.

In Michigan and Pennsylvania, Republicans launched a legal effort to stop counting ballots past Election Day.

As Trump campaign manager Justin Clark explained: “Pennsylvania’s unhinged, radical left Secretary of State Kathy Boockvar has tried her hardest to bake in a backdoor to victory for Joe Biden with late, illegal ballots in collusion with the partisan state supreme court.”
