Iran vows to retaliate for top nuclear scientists’ assassination

Iran is threatening retaliation for the apparent assassination of its top nuclear scientist, Breitbart reports. 

“A senior adviser to Iran’s supreme leader on Sunday vowed Iran would retaliate over the assassination Iran’s nuclear weapons mastermind Mohsen Fakhrizadeh, which the country has alleged Israel was behind,” Breitbart reports.

What happened?

The New York Times on Friday reported on Fakhrizadeh’s assassination.

“Iran’s top nuclear scientist, who American and Israeli intelligence have long charged was behind secret programs to design an atomic warhead, was shot and killed in an ambush on Friday as he was traveling in a vehicle in northern Iran,” the Times reported.

The outlet noted that Fakhrizadeh “has been considered the driving force behind Iran’s nuclear weapons program for two decades, and continued to work after the main part of the effort was quietly disbanded in the early 2000s.”

Who did it?

Many, including Iran, believe that Israel was behind the attack on Fkahrizadeh. Israel is believed to have carried out similar attacks in the past.

The Times, on Sunday, cited a senior Israeli official who apparently had previously been involved in tracking Fakhizadeh. That individual told the Times that Israel would do what is necessary to stop Iran’s nuclear ambitions.

Nothing, however, has been confirmed, and, it probably will not be.

Revenge coming

Kamal Kharrazi, a top adviser to Iran’s supreme leader, according to Reuters, has released a statement on the matter. He has said that “Undoubtedly, Iran will give a calculated and decisive answer to the criminals who took Martyr Mohsen Fakhrizadeh from the Iranian nation.”

Iranian state media has suggested that Iran ought to carry out an attack on the Israel city of Haifa.

“The attack should be carried out in such a way that in addition to destroying the facilities, it should also cause heavy human casualties,” the outlet wrote.

It is clear that Iran will continue with this kind of language, but whether it will actually go ahead and do any of these things is a different matter altogether. That’s because, as Reuters reports, “Iran’s rulers are aware of daunting military and political difficulties of attacking Israel.”
