When it comes to coronavirus relief, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) is negotiating in bad faith, according to the White House’s chief economic adviser.
Larry Kudlow exposed what he sees as the truth about Pelosi during a talk with Fox News on Thursday. “Our team now believes that the speaker has no intention of compromising on key issues,” he said, as The Washington Times reported.
“She is going to hold up key assistance — like the PPP [Paycheck Protection Program] assistance and unemployment assistance — and she is stringing us along,” Kudlow added, according to the Times.
“I guess it’s a mystery”
Kudlow’s remarks came just hours after the House speaker sent a letter to Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin in which she again voiced reservations about reaching a deal on COVID-19 relief with President Donald Trump and Republicans.
“We still have not received a final answer on new compromise language regarding whether the Administration will agree to the national, science-based strategy for testing, tracing, and treatment that is needed to crush the virus, as well as language on vaccines, the provider fund and ACA [Affordable Care Act] coverage for unemployed workers,” Pelosi wrote.
She went on to say that Democrats are “still awaiting” responses from the Trump administration on additional money for schools and for state and local governments. Also at issue is extra cash for child care services and new rules governing workplace liability standards.
“The American people are suffering, and they want us to come to an agreement to save lives, livelihoods and the life of our American Democracy as soon as possible,” the long-time California congresswoman contended.
But in Kudlow’s eyes, it’s all just further evidence that Pelosi will never be willing to strike a deal with the GOP. “Somehow, I guess it’s a mystery, that letter got to Politico before it got to the secretary,” the White House staffer noted in his talk with Fox News, according to The Hill.
Pelosi’s “all or none approach”
Mnuchin himself also took note of that fact. According to CNBC, the secretary wrote in a letter back to the House speaker that since she had “sent [the letter] to my office at midnight and simultaneously released it to the press, I can unfortunately only conclude that it was a political stunt.”
“Your ALL OR NONE approach is hurting hard-working Americans who need help NOW,” he added in his message to Pelosi.
Indeed, even Democrats are growing impatient, with former presidential candidate Andrew Yang and California Rep. Ro Khanna both recently urging Pelosi to make a deal.
“Nancy Pelosi take this deal! Put politics aside people are hurting,” Yang tweeted on Oct. 10. Khanna put out a similar message the next day, stressing, “People in need can’t wait until February.”
