Trump adviser forecasts even tougher immigration stance in second term

President Donald Trump is giving supporters of his immigration policy another reason to support his re-election bid.

A senior Trump administration adviser revealed this week that a second term would include even tougher crackdowns on illegal immigration, as reported by The Hill.

“Raising and enhancing the standard for entry”

Stephen Miller’s remarks on the topic came during a recent NBC News telephone interview.

He reportedly touched on several areas during the wide-ranging call on Thursday, emphasizing Trump’s focus on “limiting asylum grants, punishing and outlawing ‘sanctuary cities,’ expanding the so-called travel band with tougher screening for visa applicants, and slapping new limits on work visas,” as NBC reported.

Miller told the outlet that the goal of this policy will be “raising and enhancing the standard for entry” into the United States.

In the broader sense, he said the Trump administration would look to accomplish this goal through a combination of executive and legislative actions.

“In many cases, fixing these problems and restoring some semblance of sanity to our immigration programs does involve regulatory reform,” Miller said. “Congress has delegated a lot of authority. … And that underscores the depth of the choice facing the American people.”

Building on Trump’s first term

Miller would not, however, provide a declarative statement regarding whether a second term would include lifting the freeze that was placed on new green card and visa applications.

That would depend on a number of factors, he said of a freeze implemented in an effort to protect Americans from undue foreign competition amid the economic shutdowns implemented in response to the coronavirus pandemic.

Perhaps because immigration is one of the issues Trump’s supporters cite as a strong point in his favor, very little mainstream election news coverage and presidential debate time has been dedicated to the issue.

Compared to Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden’s plan to undo many of the Trump administration’s advancements, however, this is yet another area that gives voters a clear contrast between the two candidates vying to lead the executive branch for the next four year. The former vice president weighed in with his response to Miller’s platform.

“This agenda is designed to do one thing only: divide our communities with cheap, xenophobic rhetoric, and demonize those seeking to make legitimate asylum claims in the United States to find a life of safety for themselves and their children,” he said
