With Election Day rapidly approaching, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) is pulling out all the stops in attacking President Donald Trump.
As one notable example, she recently used a television appearance to claim that the Trump administration “has failed miserably in responding” to the COVID-19 pandemic, as reported by Breitbart.
“This administration has failed miserably”
Pelosi’s latest anti-Trump rhetoric came on Friday during an interview on MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell Reports.
“The truth is that this administration has failed miserably in responding to this virus,” she claimed.
Neither Democrats nor Republicans have been able to agree to a new coronavirus stimulus package. The latest offers were $1.9 trillion from the Trump administration and $2.2 trillion from the Democrats.
The real disagreement at this point, however, seems to be over language regarding how the money ought to be spent.
Pelosi sent a letter to Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin on Thursday in an attempt to urge the White House to respond to the Democrats’ latest offer.
“The best stimulus package you’ve ever seen”
“Your responses are critical for our negotiations to continue,” she wrote. “The President’s words that ‘after the election, we will get the best stimulus package you have ever seen’ only have meaning if he can get [Senate Majority Leader] Mitch McConnell [R-KY] to take his hand off the pause button and get Senate Republican chairmen moving toward agreement with their House counterparts.”
Her letter came two days after the president tweeted: “After the election, we’ll get the best stimulus package you’ve ever seen.”
In response, Mnuchin accused Pelosi of pulling a “political stunt” by sending the letter, asserting that she “inaccurately” depicted the current state of negotiations.
As The Hill noted, he went on to explain that the White House was receptive to specific Democratic Party proposals and provided specific feedback on others.
Mnuchin concluded: “While you accuse the Administration of holding up negotiations, you refuse to bring to the floor of the House stand-alone legislation to support Airline workers, additional Paycheck Protection Program payments to small businesses, and additional Direct Payments that we can fund using already approved money that we have not spent,” Mnuchin wrote. “Your ALL OR NONE approach is hurting hard-working Americans who need help NOW.”
