There has been plenty of speculation in this presidential race that the real candidate at top of the ticket on the Democratic side is Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA), not former Vice President Joe Biden.
Evidence continues to emerge that bolsters that speculation, such as a report from Axios about progressive Democratic activists viewing Harris as the leader of a “post-Biden Democratic Party.”
Harris: the future of the party
According to Axios, progressive Democratic activists believe that with Harris in office, the power structure in the Democratic Party will shift toward “younger, more diverse and more liberal hands.”
Harris is reportedly viewed by some as the “best hope” for progressives to penetrate the “older, largely white inner circle” that currently surrounds Biden. These progressives hope Harris will be able to influence Biden in making personnel and staffing decisions in the administration and help push the Democratic Party and White House toward a younger and more progressive makeup.
BlackPAC founder Adrianne Shropshire told Axios that there needs to be a “transition and bridge to the New Democratic Party,” and Harris is particularly well suited to serve that role.
“People believe Biden when he says ‘Black Lives Matter’ and ‘We need to address racism in our nation,'” Shropshire said. “But they also believe he’s old school, and in order to solve these problems we actually need newer, progressive ideas — and voices that actually have some experience, direct or indirect, with the problems we’re talking about.”
There was also talk from other activists about how Harris would apply a “racial and gender lens” and would be more accountable to the young progressive left than Biden, who is viewed as being beholden to the corporate and establishment interests that have governed the party for too long.
All signs point to a Harris takeover
During a campaign event in Fort Worth, Texas on Friday, Harris was introduced as the “next president of the United States” by the Texas state director for the Biden campaign, Rebecca Acuña, Breitbart reported.
That only serves as fuel on the speculative fire that Harris is actually who would be in charge, whether vicariously or directly, if Biden is elected.
It’s a fire that President Donald Trump is only too willing to stoke among his base of supporters and other voters who are concerned about the direction Harris would take the nation.
“If he gets elected, three weeks into his presidency, they’ll say, ‘Kamala are you ready? Let’s go,'” Trump said during a rally in Michigan on Tuesday.
A Harris presidency, whether she is officially elevated to the top or merely calls the shots from behind, has the potential to utterly transform the country, and everyone needs to understand that if Biden is elected then it will likely be a matter of time and formality before it is Harris who is fully in charge.
