The pope gives good news to the LGBTQ community

The Washington Examiner reports that Pope Francis, in his latest controversial declaration, has come out in support of same-sex civil unions.

The pope’s comments come from a new documentary, called “Francesco,” which premiered in Rome on Wednesday. “What we have to create is a civil union law,” Francis said.

He continued: “Homosexuals have a right to be a part of the family. They’re children of God and have a right to a family. Nobody should be thrown out or be made miserable because of it.”

Not the first time

This position is nothing new for Pope Francis, which he pointed out in the film, saying, that he has “stood up” for same-sex couples seeking civil unions in the past. That was back when he was still Jorge Mario Bergoglio, the archbishop of Buenos Aires.

The New York Times reports that, in 2010, when Francis was still the archbishop, he supported a push to legalize gay marriage, even trying to get cardinals to compromise on their religious beliefs and to join him.

Of course, Pope Francis, in his most recent statement, is right: we are all creatures of God and we all ought to treat each other as such. But, that has very little to do with the issue at hand.

The pope’s response

The pope, in the past, has addressed this question arguing that his position does not override the church’s teaching that marriage is between “a man and a woman.” He also has said that “we must consider different cases and evaluate each particular case.”

To many Catholics, however, this answer has been unsatisfactory.

It, for example, leaves unanswered how a Catholic could support a way of life that is considered sinful by the Bible and still be a good Catholic. If engaging in homosexual activities is sinful, wouldn’t encouraging it with a right to same-sex unions be promoting sin?

It’s fair to say that Pope Francis has been a controversial leader of the Catholic Church, at times taking positions that can only be described as “far left.” Some of these positions have been overlooked by many, including the Faithful. But traditional Catholics may be feeling concerned that the Pope latest move is the beginning of the end for their church.
