House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has no intention of relinquishing her power just yet.
The California Democrat announced Sunday that she will seek another term as speaker if Democrats hold onto the House this November, The Hill reported.
“Vote your health”
“Yes, I am,” Pelosi told CNN’s Jake Tapper, who asked Pelosi whether she would seek re-election to the office, according to The Hill.
“But let me also say that we have to win the Senate, so all this discussion of the virus takes us to the importance of this election,” she added. “Vote your health.”
Pelosi, who is 80, won back the speaker’s gavel in the 2018 midterms, according to the New York Post. The longtime lawmaker won her first term as speaker in the 2000s, becoming the first woman to serve in the role.
The Democrat’s last two years in the office have been markedly contentious. She came into the role in the midst of a government shutdown fight over Donald Trump’s border wall, and she went on to impeach the president last year after long dithering on whether to take the drastic step.
Pelosi is not on speaking terms with the president, who she has often disparaged in pointed terms, and vice versa.
Term ends in controversy for Pelosi
Even as she fought with Trump, Pelosi spent a good part of her latest term feuding with liberals to her left, like New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D).
The House speaker has continued to face occasional challenges to her approach, with some Democrats calling on her to be more compromising in the fight over coronavirus stimulus funding as countless Americans continue to suffer the economic shocks of the pandemic.
The Democrat has spent the final days of a controversial term consumed in that battle, in which she insists Republicans have not been willing to spend enough to meet the needs of the people, while Republicans accuse her of making partisan proposals that have little to do with the public health threat.
“They keep moving the goalposts,” Pelosi said of Republicans earlier this month, according to USA Today. “Every time they say we move the goalposts, that means they’re projecting what they did. But let’s just — let’s be hopeful.”
While Pelosi could remain a fixture in Washington politics for the time being, she made a commitment in 2018 to limit herself to one more term, The Hill notes.
