Former Congressman Jason Lewis, the Republican candidate for Senate in Minnesota, has been fighting to take the Senate seat from incumbent Tina Smith (D-MI).
While fighting out the last few weeks of the close race, Lewis has found himself in a different kind of battle.
The Republican candidate was taken to the hospital on Monday after he began to experience severe abdominal pain, Politico reported.
Lewis eager to get back to campaigning
Lewis’ campaign announced on Monday that the congressman was in the hospital preparing for emergency surgery.
“Early this morning, Congressman Lewis was rushed to hospital to the emergency room with severe abdominal pain,” campaign manager Tom Syzmanski said in a statement. “Following tests and examiners, doctors determined that he is suffering from severe internal hernia, a diagnosis which they indicated is life-threatening if not treated quickly.”
He continued, “Prior to being taken to the operating room, Jason was in good spirits, optimistic, and true to form, he was speculating about when he could resume campaigning, eager to continue fighting for his fellow Minnesotans.”
Syzmanski asked supporters to join him in praying for the candidate’s recovery, adding that he would provide additional information as it became available.
Two hours later, the campaign manager released a second statement that said, “I am pleased to report that according to Congressman Lewis’ doctor, his emergency surgery this morning to treat an internal hernia was successful and minimally invasive.”
Polls show close Senate and presidential race
Minnesota’s Senate race appears to have grown significantly tighter in recent months, the Daily Wire reported.
SurveyUSA showed the two candidates within 1 point of each other despite an earlier poll that had Smith up by 7 points.
In addition to facing a close Senate campaign, Minnesota is also hotly contested at the federal level as well. In 2016, President Donald Trump lost the state by fewer than 2 points, The New York Times reported.
While most polls show Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden holding a comfortable lead in the North Star State, a poll released by the Trafalgar Group reports that he and the president are nearly dead even, with Biden having the support of 46.9% of voters compared to 46.5% who back Trump.
