Democratic vice presidential nominee Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA) had a bizarre response to a question about her political views.
Former Vice President Joe Biden’s running mate laughed out loud Sunday when asked by 60 Minutes’ host Norah O’Donnell whether or not she considers herself a socialist, Fox New reported.
Harris laughs when asked if she’s a socialist
President Donald Trump has often attacked Biden as a “Trojan horse” for the more radical ideas espoused by Harris, who famously flirted with far-left proposals like Medicare for All during her doomed primary bid. She was also clearly opposed to fracking, a position that she and Biden have since sought to keep at a distance.
O’Donnell challenged Harris to give voters a clear idea of how she would govern, noting that Harris has been named the most liberal member of the Senate by a non-partisan group, something often brought up by Trump and his allies. O’Donnell mentioned Harris’s support of Medicare for All, legalizing marijuana, and the Green New Deal.
Harris avoided the question. “What I will do, and I promise you this, and this is what Joe wants me to do, this was part of our deal, I will always share with him my lived experience as it relates to any issue that we confront,” she said.
O’Donnell pressed the matter, asking whether the Democrat would bring a “socialist or progressive perspective,” given her record. Harris then awkwardly burst into laughter and started reciting details of her biography.
“No. No,” she said. “It is the perspective of– of a woman who grew up– a Black child in America, who was also a prosecutor, who also has a mother who arrived here at the age of 19 from India. Who also, you know, — likes hip hop,” she said.
Trump mocks strange laughter
Trump mocked Harris’s strange laugh at a rally in Pennsylvania on Monday, saying that there is something not right with the senator. See the laughing clip below:
“She will not be the first woman president, you can’t let that happen. I said, ‘Is there something wrong with her?’ She kept laughing at very, you know, serious questions,” he said.
The Democrat was also asked specifically to respond to Trump’s “Trojan horse” comment.
“I am not gonna be confined to Donald Trump’s definition of who I or anybody else is,” Harris added. “And I think America has learned that that would be a mistake.” So that’s a yes?
